This is the first time I've heard this association. If I were to through out a relatively uneducated guess, I'd say if this association in fact exists on a large scale, perhaps it's because Freddy Mercury was one of, if not the first, famous openly gay man and had a sick moustache?.

I mean in the past Mustaches were know to be queer coded but way more then just gay men have them. I think at the end of the day Mustaches tend to be a very handsome look and straight culture in the past likes to put men in a box saying if you do this or that you’re gay but it’s like it’s just facial hair people!.
